Weed Free Garden using Cardboard | Mistakes to Avoid
How do you take it? 😋
For seedling its alright. For fruiting veggie and expect high yiels i highly suggest high-end growlight made for cannabis
Old Matchbox add sand paper inside facing in and shake up the seeds within... very easy and effective
That also works!
Slugs are the worst this year, guess I'll hafta share a beer or two.
I got them Hamm's but ended up drinking a lot of it. Try garlic spray as well! It's a game changer
@@FastGardeningMichigan Haha, i'll try garlic spray, beer is too expensive in Ontario. Thanks 😊
I'm an AZ where the first 3 months of gardening there is pretty much no rain (April, May, June) and then we get a lot of rain starting in July. We get about 14 inches on average per year. So, I imagine this works for our zone, but not as well. I just laid down about 3 inches of wood chips on a new garden I'll be doing. I'll separate out the wood chips and put a thick layer of compost for a fall garden. I'm hoping it will make it so I don't need to water as much but I imagine, in the early part of the year, I'll still need to water a little.
We had close to 11 weeks of no rain in the summer here a couple years ago. My soil looked like concrete. That's when I mulched it with straw and grass clippings and watered it once more then left it alone. Hand watering a quarter acre everyday was too much
I’m doing it but only for my needs, so don’t need that much spawn or substrate. I have 3 100g bags of portobello, oyster & shiitake spawn. I am doing a small bag of each. Do what suits your circumstances & need.
Mid South, my sunflowers are withering the ground got rockhard
Is it tilled soil?
Lightning splits nitrogen molecules whch then attach to oxygen and create nitrogen oxides that get carried down with rain. This makes the N plant available. Lightning makes fertalizer.
Atmospheric nutrients as well
Frankenstein's Monsters as well
That's so cool 😎
Thanks!
I keep my rows narrow to avoid sun exposure to dry out the ground. I strategically plant taller crops and flowers to shade other crops. I have a lot of purslane this year too. I agree with less watering!
I don't think people realize even full sun crops appreciate some shade. My peppers love when the sun gets behind the maple tree in the afternoon.
Robbie I’m so happy you’re thriving. I’ve been watching your channel since the beginning and I’ve seen how much time and energy you’ve invested. You deserve every bit of your success.
I appreciate the kind words!
Thanks for the advice.. Your plants and dirt / soil are looking great.
Couple years of tossing organic matter and pulling weeds and leaving them on the surface has paid off. I noticed when I dig to plant that the soil is great even further down. Worms are taking everything down
Everything is looking so good!
Thanks! I thought I was behind this year but the volunteers filled everything out!
Also try? Steel fencing/ galvanized steel/ better yet is bare copper wire! Put with the plants! Same as a rain = it brings atmosphere/earth's magnetic field too the plants!
I'm an electrician so I don't buy into the electrocute thing. The ground is naturally grounded and attracts that without help. That's why we drive ground rods for services. A house is a floating neutral without one if the feeder neutral breaks
Voodoo!
I'm a plant em and forget em kinda Gardener. Oh and thanks for the heads up this spring on thinning raspberries got a bumper crop this year. Made raspberry brownies last night!
The black raspberries are going nuts here. The kids were tearing them up
You get rain this morning? out west of you we had a killer storm brew up last night
I made my first ever berry pie a few days ago!!! Brownies with black raspberries sounds delectable. 🤤
What kind of sunflowers are these that get more then one head?
Can't remember all of them but some are autumn beauty, velvet queen, and mammoth Russian. The suckers can flower even on single headed varieties
@@FastGardeningMichigan thank you!
Them plants could have used some nutrients dude.but yeah i guess my chickens can have my trim
These are plants in the late fall. They are near death. They had plenty of nutrients before the cold weather came
Another problem with beer trap traps is they also kill useful Beetles good idea
I have slugs climb a wheelbarrow to get to seedlings so I figured they'd have no issue going up a couple inches of plastic. I never liked the idea of ground bugs falling in. Rather let the slugs climb in
Great video, brother. Just the info I was looking for!
Thanks!
I think they work also but a natural nest would not be hanging and moving like that. It has to be stationary
I am a newbee and I planted about 14 fruit trees. I have not pruned them and they are 2 to 3 years old since planting. I will do what you did this winter. What about the base of the trees? do i need to keep the base free of weeds? I weed wacked them and put tree rubber mat rings around them. Thanks for your advice.
My trees are in areas with a heavy woodchips mulch. I'll take any weeds that pop up and pull them and leave them on top of the mulch to break down but trees can handle weeds. I might have to do summer pruning on my plum. It's out of control
My comfrey doesn’t need my help. It grows, seeds and split all on its lonesome. It’s quite a bully. 🤣
I try to not let my true comfrey go to seed but I've missed a few 😂. I just like knowing that Bocking 4 and 14 have sterile seeds so I can leave the flowers for the bees
Got a question or maybe a recommendation for a video and I've seen them in other videos you have done When the growing season is over this year I'm wanting to move my tomato plant and jalapeno plant into my basement on a grow table with lights heating pads whatever it needs to stimulate the growth to continue to get even some kind of harvest over the fall in winter months I know you've shown shop lights but just was curious if there's any other suggestions for doing this kind of project
You can take suckers off tomatoes or peppers and root them in water, plants and grow all winter. Peppers you can actually dig up and trim the roots way down and the stems down to nodes and keep the same plant growing. I prefer to grow orange hat tomatoes indoors. You can grow full plants in 4" pots
Outside pride ?! They should have named it South Side Pride! Ha made with empty Old Style cans and White Castle hamburger boxes 😂
Old style is good slug bait. I use Hamm's but usually end up drinking it. Now the slugs are getting PBR. I prefer Stroh's but it's hard to find
I worked a bar in NOLA in 2005 and they had just found out about PBR ha was selling it $5 a can. I told the staff up north you can get a 30 pack for the same price 😅
@@4quall it costs more now! Used to be cheap
I leave Milkweed to feed the butterflies . The flowers smell great and look nice too.
I have a bunch of them in my yard! Currently raising a swallowtail caterpillar inside
I like to use radish and arugula as a cover crop too. The arugula produces a pretty yellow flower. I love the way you think!
Borage is turning out to be a nice cover as well. Along with tomatoes and nasturtiums. I usually coat my annual areas with grass and leaves so these will all contribute to that biomass. Bees love it and the soil loves the shade. Grows nonstop for the chickens to eat.
Where do you get your spawn?
NorthSpore
Look up Indian Runner Ducks. They don’t swim, or fly, and they love to eat weeds, slugs, and snails. Oh, and caterpillars. Many permies swear by them…. Cheers, Rov
Unfortunately I'd just be feeding the coyotes
My tomatoes are all wilting....😢😢😢..I've tried everything....light watering....everything..
Is it hot out?
@@FastGardeningMichigan Yes but I'm in the Caribbean...sometimes it rains alot and then sometimes it's extremely hot.
@@nicole4eva111 I've always found wilting a sign of root stress. Whether it's roots rotting due to too much moisture or roots getting too hot because soil isn't covered. If it's extremely dry they'll send the water to the roots to conserve moisture. In containers, wilting is usually root bound and root bound traps moisture leading to root rot. Everything has to do with the roots with tomatoes! They don't love heat and water as much as some believe
@@FastGardeningMichigan OK....I think I'll have to try them in bigger pots in the shade because it's extremely hot here sometimes. I'll keep trying. Thank you for responding.
This mixture (and beer traps) has done a number on the slug population in my garden. The smell is strong enough I think it is keeping deer and rabits away, also.
Kept raccoons from digging up my tomatoes! They dug up the same plants 2 nights in a row then I sprayed this and they've left them alone.
What type of beans are they?
Just bush type green beans
I did miss the cold stratification, unfortunately!
It's not necessary. Just helps! Mine dropped seeds this spring and they already sprouted so no cold stratification outdoors
Thank you, I will go ahead and try it now. Happy planting 😊
Thank you, the exact info I was looking for!
Great!
Excellent, thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Im not putting anything on my soil that still smells bad. Waiting until the smell goes away is best, I've been told. Or make lactic acid bacteria serum and add a bit to the brew, takes the smell away quick.
I've been digging up a soggy area of my chicken run and putting it around plants. Smells like anaerobic swamp mud but the plants are loving it
Thank your for appreciating nature, you are a good person
Thanks!
Not sure this will really work here in the UK because these thistles have runners... Unless it's a slightly different variety to the one we have here which is creeping thistle (Circium arvense)
These have runners as well. It is true that the runners roots will send up new shoots BUT after repeated removal the system grows tired and dies. Thistles love compacted soil so they also disappear when the soil becomes healthy
Could you post the list of ingredients for me, please?
1 gallon of water and put some shredded cloves of garlic in it. I used 2 heads, or 8 cloves. Let sit for 3 days then strain and dilute one part garlic water to 1 part water. Spray on plants!
You can also add cayenne pepper and onion.
@@FastGardeningMichigan excellent, thank you so much.
Great tip to know too much H2O.
Water and sun are 2 things people claim tomatoes love BUT I find that to be incorrect. My tomatoes love a half day of shade and days or weeks between watering
this stuff isn't really suitable for use as mix-in compost. this is really only good for on-the-top. With all that unfinished stuff in it, it will USE nitrogen.
I'd never mix in compost. That would mean I'm destroying the soil.
I have an adult moonflower..how big of a hole, and how deep do I have to plant it?
I'd plant it to the soil level in the pot
I might try growing garlic and cyan peppers to make my own. If my garden was big enough, growing them around my garden as a fence might work as well. That's what I would do, its almost free.
Slugs and other pests do not mind garlic plants themselves and they will eat cayenne plants. It's the concentrated scent that they don't like
@@FastGardeningMichigan I see. Ty, You saved me a lot of experiment time. I may still grow it just for the mixture and for myself.
Ty!
Thanks for watching and hope this helps!
I'm swamped with slugs. How do I get rid of them. Salt isn't working.
ruclips.net/video/5iUjwrmxufo/видео.html try making this
ruclips.net/video/5iUjwrmxufo/видео.html try making this
Excellent! Thanks. Growing cyan amd garlic as a fence around your garden might work as well.
I didn’t have a line laser bright enough to shine across my entire garden. So I secured the guide wire to the first post, then had my son hold the wire about level on the next post. I used a 4 ft level to get it perfectly level, then wrapped the wire in the next post securing it stays at the same level height. Did the all the way down post to post worked great. Great video a lot of good tips here.
I was using a 4 foot level to start. Ended up waiting until dark and using the laser.
This actually works. And the 3 foot radius is about right. First thing is to use nematodes then put out the beer traps. I'm in the UK and I used 2.27 litre (four pint) plastic milk containers with the rectangular hole about 8-10 cm from the bottom. Works a treat. Thanks and well done.
I've got a bunch I made last year out now. Between these and garlic spray slugs have not been a problem
You can use the leaves to make tea with 😊 Great video 💯
Thanks!
You can also get a vivosun aerolight for about $120. Sure, it may be slightly overpriced but it hooks up to their automated control system and has a full spectrum that can be adjusted for the stage of the plant. So to just suggest it's not any different at all is a little misleading. Sure you don't need to monitor your temp, humidity, vpd, and automate your lights but it sure does make life easier.
I use a cheap timer to control the lights. Using soil with compost my chickens make containing life and only using rain water has proven to be more important than the lights themselves. I grew cannabis and tomatoes indoors with high yield this past winter and my plant starts take a quarter of the time to be ready.. tomatoes and peppers in 26 days vs. 6-8 weeks. Energy costs and start up cost to yield needs to be factored. You can get a light that's perfect but if it costs a lot of money and costs a lot to operate, the yield, although more, may cost more than a set up that yields less.
Thx you! Moved in with a friend who has tons of plants. He brings all the large pots into the garage during the winter, brings them back out in the spring. After 20 yrs of everything coming back this yr only 4 plants iut of 30 cane back. He gv his lowes card & said but what you want to replace all that didnt return. I spent $600 on small plants, soil. I did put fresh soil on top of some of the planters w/o growing plants, watered, hoping nutrients would inspire some to pop up. To my knowledge nothing returned. After everything i planted grew tall, some on trellises, some not. My sister claims a moon flower was popping up alongside of 1 i had planted. I dont remember seeing it however i do pull out weeds etc ebery couple of wks. Ive heard this story 3x already so i sent off for moon flower seeds. Theyve now been clip & are soaking in warm water. It is the 2nd wk of june in zone 8 NW Mississippi. Im praying i can pop them in the dirt tomo to put an end to "you killed the moon plants" i pray all 50 seeds take off like wildfire! If so i intend to buy trellises. 🤞 heres to redeeming myself while outshining their measley plant that wasnt so easily identifiable 😂
I'm about to create a new bed for my moons. I've seen these things growing along highways. They will grow in any conditions! Mine are Datura Innoxia. Bush type. They die back every year but self seed. Unfortunately my original patch got overtaken by quack grass so I'm starting fresh. These tips were implemented and I have a bunch coming up! Good luck! This is something I grew as a small child from seeds given to us by farmers in the family so it's cool to keep the memories alive and watch the hummingbird moths enjoy them at night
Why not just get a cat Robbie? 😅
I have 2 inside and one outside that wants to come inside 😂
@@FastGardeningMichigan we got two Tabby brothers from an abandoned building on Kedzie and 47th and a third little female we found thrown out in the woods here in Michigan by summer people a few years ago . I became a cat person on accident ha
